Is the “hush workcation” the new vacation trend? Nearly a third of Americans admitted they’ve worked remotely on vacation without telling their bosses.<br/><br/>The poll of 2,000 employed Americans — split evenly among travelers and hotel workers — found 52% of them would use their vacation travels as a chance to work remotely and 29% have done so without notifying anyone at work.<br/><br/>Close to four in 10 (39%) explained it was simply because they like what they do for work. Meanwhile, others would work on vacation to hit an important work deadline that overlapped with their vacation time (28%) or to save on their PTO (26%). <br/><br/>And for many others, traveling for work opens the door to other opportunities: nearly half (48%) have extended their work trips into vacations at their destination.<br/><br/>Commissioned by Mews, a hospitality cloud system, and conducted by OnePoll, the study reveals that four in five working Americans would be willing to work remotely from their hotel. <br/><br/>While working from the comfort of one’s hotel room is the top preference (69%), a quarter of respondents said they would prefer to work remotely from the hotel pool or spa, and nearly 25% chose a hotel bar or restaurant. <br/><br/>Three in four travelers (74%) and hotel workers (75%) agree that Americans are prioritizing travel more this year than last.<br/><br/>Seventy-nine percent are planning all their travels for the year “as soon as they possibly can” and estimate they’ll take a total of 11 trips in 2024.<br/><br/>Among the trips planned are three vacations and three family trips; alongside three work trips and two “bleisure” trips — combining business with leisure — for employed respondents.<br/><br/>Hotel workers are prepared — they claimed guests traveling for work or bleisure are the easiest to cater to (83% and 76%, respectively). They anticipate the guests will tip more (39%), extend their stay more frequently (38%), and use hotel amenities more (31%) in the year ahead. <br/><br/>Nearly a third of guests stated a perfect hotel would have keyless room entry (34%) and in-room smart home devices (43%) and nearly one-fourth would prefer mobile room entry (27%) and digital ordering (24%). <br/><br/>The study also found that hotel workers anticipate guests to use technology more in 2024, with a fourth expecting them to check in more frequently via a hotel website, app or digital kiosk compared to previous years. <br/><br/>More than 40% of travelers stated they prefer to check in via a hotel’s website, app or digital kiosk, and nearly 80% said they would be willing to stay at a hotel that had a completely automated front desk or self-service kiosk. <br/><br/>A third (36%) admitted they have turned to AI for recommendations while booking travel.

A man was finally about to hug his brother for the first time after a dream where he had a sibling prompted him to take a DNA test and discover a new family member. Despite moving to the Katy, Texas, area, Phuong Doan did not know that his half-brother, Juan Lewis, had attended high school just down the road. In fact, Phuong, who moved to the United States from Vietnam in the 90s, had been searching for his American family for five decades, having been made aware that his father was once in the U.S. military when he met his mother in his homeland. Phuong's half-brother, Juan, meanwhile, had no idea that he had a sibling with ties on the other side of the world, either, as his father, Melvin Lewis, passed away in 1988 and never mentioned the subject. It wasn't until Juan, who was also in the military, came down with COVID that he had a chance dream, which he said informed him that he had a sibling. Juan puts the vision he had down to the drugs that he was taking to fight the disease – but the experience was enough for him to look into his genealogy. When a DNA website matched Juan with Phuong, the Air Force veteran thought there must have been a mistake, given how different Phuong's name sounded from his own. But having contacted the website, Juan was informed the match was correct, and so he and Phuong started messaging, piecing together their incredible story. The pair were in contact over the years that followed before Juan and Phuong's wife, Linda, decided to plan a surprise first meeting for her husband. In September 2023, at a salon where Linda works in Katy, Texas, Phuong was chatting to his wife when Juan and his family walked in for the big surprise. A stunned Phuong could not believe his eyes, heading over to his half-brother for an emotional first hug that had been fifty years in the making.

Union ‘optimistic’ as STV staff go on strike for second time in pay dispute<br/>NUJ members at STV are seeking a 6% pay rise.<br/><br/>More talks with management are expected after STV journalists walked out on strike for a second time in a dispute over pay, a union organiser has said.<br/><br/>The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) is seeking a 6% pay rise for members at broadcaster STV to “keep pace with inflation” during the cost-of-living crisis.<br/><br/>NUJ representatives and staff attended the STV annual general meeting (AGM) in Glasgow on Wednesday where they put questions about the dispute to the board.<br/><br/>Nick McGowan-Lowe, NUJ national organiser for Scotland, said they are optimistic the industrial action and attendance at the AGM has “had the desired effect” and said that more talks with management are now planned.<br/><br/>The action by NUJ members at STV across Scotland will disrupt news programming on Wednesday, with the flagship STV News At Six programme due to be replaced by Sean’s Scotland, and network show Peston aired in place of Scotland Tonight.<br/><br/>Mr McGowan-Lowe said there was a “strong” presence on the picket line in Glasgow, where staff were joined by colleagues who had travelled from Dundee and Edinburgh.<br/><br/>He said: “We put questions to the board about the dispute highlighting that, and as a result both the chair and the chief executive have committed to get back into talks as soon as possible.<br/><br/>“At the moment the next step is more talks to moving towards a resolution so we remain optimistic that today’s strike action and attendance at the AGM has had the desired effect.<br/><br/>“I really think we showed our strength today and I’m hoping that management at STV have understood that they need to take control of this dispute and sit round the table to work out an agreement.”<br/><br/>The strike comes after union members walked out for 24 hours on March 28 and the latest pay offer put forward by the company was rejected by staff.<br/>NUJ members at STV around the country including Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow walked out for 24 hours on Wednesday.<br/><br/>On the picket line in Glasgow they held banners calling for “Fair pay for journalists” and “Fair pay now”.<br/><br/>An STV spokesperson said: “STV has always been open to dialogue and today both our chair and chief executive reiterated the company’s willingness to continue discussions and hope for a swift resolution.”<br/><br/>The company added: “We’re disappointed that following discussions and an enhanced offer being made, members of the NUJ have decided to proceed with strike action on May 1.<br/><br/>“We understand that almost half of NUJ members voted to accept the enhanced offer, which included a bonus payment for all STV staff.<br/><br/>“We remain open to further dialogue but the NUJ’s claim for an above inflation pay increase of 6% – nearly twice the current level of inflation – is unrealistic and unaffordable. We have made clear that we will not agree a separate deal for NUJ members in excess of the award for all colleagues; and we mainta
